TEXTUAL ANALYSIS
Saudi preacher who 'raped and tortured' his five -year-old daughter to death is released after paying 'blood money'
A ‘celebrity’ Saudi preacher accused of raping, torturing and killing his five-year-old daughter has reportedly been released from custody after agreeing to pay ‘blood money’.
Fayhan al-Ghamdi had been accused of killing his daughter Lama, who suffered multiple injuries including a crushed skull, broken back, broken ribs, a broken left arm and extensive bruising and burns. Social workers say she had also been repeatedly raped and burnt.
Fayhan al-Ghamdi admitted using a cane and cables to inflict the injuries after doubting his five-year-old daughter’s virginity and taking her to a doctor, according to the campaign group Women to Drive.
Rather than getting the death penalty or receiving a long prison sentence for the crime, Fayhan al-Ghamdi served only a few months in jail before a judge ruled the prosecution could only seek ‘blood money’.
The tone of the text is mostly informative because it is a news text but also, it is critical and sarcastic ('blood money', 'critical' ).In text, past tense is used mostly because it describes incidents happened in the past. I chose this news because it impressed me very much and I wanted everybody to be aware of this scandal and injustice.

REFLECTION TASK 2.b
MAN
I choose this short movie named "MAN" by Steve Cutts. When I first watched it, I thought that it illustrates exactly just in three and a half minute what human beings has been doing to the nature since the first appearance of them. It is quite an impressive short movie, ıt has a high tempo which makes it very attractive. At the beginning of the movie, when the man first appeared on the secreen bird and squirrel voices can be heard and music is slower, after the animals saw the man they run away. I think director wants to describe the man as a creature that needs to be afraid. During the movie, we see just a man but billions of people are guilty of the destruction of the nature, I think a man symbolises that environmental pollution is the fault of all humanity also even just a man can damage the environment seriously. The music gets faster as the movie flows. As the voice of the background music rises, the flow of incidents accelerates too. When the music is slower, ancient times are described when there was less people on earth and there was less harm. The accelaration of the music and fast flow of incidents describes the population growth and excessive increase in consumption. We see on the ship the expression "ruler of the sea". This ruler pollutes the sea, kills the seals, cuts the trees, kills the animals, establish factories to feed himself.Towards the end, we see that sky gets darker, piles of dumps rises, there is no animal and nature sound. The end of the movie is very ironic and like a punishment for man. When he first appeared on earth, he crushed a ladybird likewise, when aliens fist appeared on earth they crushed man and made a mat from him.
REFLECTION TASK 2.a
SOCIAL(!) MEDIA
I choose social media as my topic because it has an important place in our daily lives.Almost everybody whom I know, has at least one social media account and we know that it has many advantages and positive effects but I want to look from a different perspective.I think it effects people negatively but everybody is so fascinated by social media and so addicted to it that they can not see the negative effects.
Some people are so addicted to it, especially young people, that they live in that fake world. Social media makes asocial people even more asocial and provide them to hide this.I know people who says that I do not need anybody because I have my computer or some think that when someone has a social media account he is social. I think it created a wrong perception of being social in community.
They are together but alone. |
From my point of view, social media turned into something where people show themselves more different than their actual look and personality. I think everybody should accept others as they are but, in social media it is very easy to criticise and label others as "not perfect". Especially womens are exposed to the effects or idal images of social media very much.I want to give an example of new social media trend "thigh gap." According to this social media trend, however much the gap between two legs, women is so much beautiful. It is hard to believe but many women try to have a thigh gap without questioning because it is a popular social media topic that can be seen in instagram and tumblr.
a new trend prompts women to be anorexic |
When it is used properly, it provides the possibility of following what is happening in the country and in the world but many people waste their hours, even days doing useless things in social media.Especially children have an easy access to social media and they can not distinguish between the wrong and accurate information or they can be manipulated easily.

REFLECTİON TASK 1.b
PAVEMENT PICASSO, JULIAN BEEVER
He is a British artist who was born in 1959.I choose him because I think he deserves to be recognized more. He is a street artist. He is best known for his three-dimensional pavement creations. He first designs his drawings on paper, he uses chalk to draw pictures on pavement, per picture, he works 3 days aproximetely.
His works are so realistic that sometimes passerbys step out of the way so that they would not fall in.

Beever uses a projection technique called anamorphosisto create the illusion of three dimensions. He uses eye tricks, his art appears just when looked from the right angle.
Beevers always takes a photograph to preserve the drawing because eventually weather and urban crowds wear the pictures away. He says "If it rains, it means I have done a lot of hard work for nothing."

His works can be seen across the world, now he lives in Belgium. Also, in 2010 he released a book named Pavement Chalk Artist.
